Cork County Welcome Home their Rowing Champions

The National Rowing Centre, Cork, invites everyone to join the rowing community in celebrating Ireland’s success at the World Rowing Championships this Saturday.

Sanita Pušpure of Ballincollig took gold in the women’s single scull, and Cork brothers Paul and Gary O’Donovan secured gold in the lightweight double sculls at this year’s World Rowing Championships. The Irish Rowing Team also included Emily Hegarty and Aifric Keogh, who experienced their first world championship final as a pair.

The National Rowing Centre in Farran Wood, Cork is the headquarters of Rowing Ireland and the only national sporting headquarters located outside of Dublin. The centre overlooks the Lee Valley and has hosted a range of regattas this year; including Coupe de la Jeunesse – an international rowing regatta which saw rowers across 14 countries compete at the centre.

This Saturday, 29th September, the Mayor of County Cork Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy is encouraging everyone to join him at the National Rowing Centre from 3pm where attendees can welcome and meet The Rowing Ireland team, and enjoy music, face painting, and balloon modelling. The Mayor has praised the Irish Team reckoning them as ‘the very epitome of sport and sportsmanship’, and is very much looking forward to Saturday’s event.

‘We have an amazing facility right here in the beautiful Lee Valley and I would ask everyone to join us on what promises to be a wonderful afternoon.’

Ireland is currently second in the World in the rowing standings with high ambitions for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. CEO of Rowing Ireland Michelle Carpenter spoke about the weekend welcoming saying: ‘We are delighted to welcome our heroes back to their home at the National Rowing Centre in Cork, in particular during a weekend where we will host the first of the Irish Trial event which will encourage and determine future rowers for Paris 2024 and beyond.’
