The number of people that travel into Dublin City centre on bicycle’s looks set to surpass the number of people who travel into the capital every day on the Luas. That was the message being delivered at the annual European Cyclists Federation conference that was held recently at Dublin’s Wood Key.

The general consensus was that Ireland could copy the model used in the Czech Republic that recently received over €100 million from the European Union to develop their cycle ways. The National Transport Authority has planned to increase the cycle network for the greater Dublin area to 2, 840km by the year 2021.

Joe Seymour of consultants Aecom said that the number of cyclists had doubled since 2006 and “would have overtaken the Luas already” if it were not for tram extensions to Cherrywood and to Saggart. He also believes that the number of people cycling into the city centre would soon overtake the amount of people that travel in on the Luas.
