Electric roads are set to be tested next year in Sweden

Electric city buses could soon be charged wirelessly whilst in operation as part of the Volvo Group’s intention to begin testing an electric road.

They intend to do this together with the Swedish Transport Administration and have said that they will examine the potential for building the electric roads. This would see buses being charged whilst in operation.

To test the idea it has been reported that an electric road could potentially be constructed in Gothenburg in 2015. Volvo believes that the roads would benefit everyone and provide a quieter and more climate-friendly public transport.

The electric roads would charge the vehicles batteries continuously while they are in operation by transferring energy from the electricity grid to a vehicle. This would be very beneficial as the electric vehicle would not have to be static and plugged in to charge.

It is an exciting prospect according to Niklas Gustavsson, Executive Vice President, Corporate Sustainability & Public Affairs of the Volvo Group who said “Vehicles capable of being charged directly from the road during operation could become the next pioneering step in the development towards reduced environmental impact, and this is fully in line with our vision of becoming the world leader in sustainable transport solutions.”

He went on to add “Close cooperation between society and industry is needed for such a development to be possible and we look forward to investigating the possibilities together with the City of Gothenburg.”
