A group of 100 serving and retired members of An Garda Síochána from all over Ireland have come together to organise and take part in a ‘Four Peak Mountain Challenge’.

The event is a three day challenge taking place in May and participants will climb the highest mountain peak in each of the 4 provinces of Ireland; Carrantoohill in Co Kerry, Mweelrea in Co Mayo, Slieve Donard in Co Down and Lugnaquilla in Co Wicklow.

Participants will be accompanied by serving officers from the NYPD, PSNI, Australian and Spanish Police who are taking part in and supporting the challenge.

The aim of the challenge is to promote mental health awareness within An Garda Síochána and in the wider community.

The ‘Four Peak Mountain Challenge’ also hopes to raise much needed funds for Aware’s depression support and mental health education and information services for individuals, families and communities throughout the country.

Members of the gardaí have raised €30,000 to date and hope to reach €50,000 by next month.

Aware relies on fundraising events like this, as well as corporate and public donations, for 85% of its annual funding.

Sunday May 21: Lugnaquilla, Co. Wicklow
