Benefits of Mindfulness
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
Benefits
Extensive research on mindfulness practice has shown it to be effective with a number of concerns that are relevant to students for example:
- Enhances the ability to attend and to concentrate
- Increases productivity
- Increases the ability to manage stress
- Develops greater self awareness
- Improves self esteem
- Reduces anxiety, tension, low mood and depression
- Facilitates interpersonal relationships
- Enables better sleep
- Increases vitality
- Enhances psychological and physical well-being
People who are more mindful are less likely to experience psychological distress. They have greater awareness, understanding and acceptance of their emotions as well as being less reactive to them.
They do not get stuck in repetitive thinking patterns (a process known as ruminations) and are less likely to shy away from difficult experiences. They have less frequent negative thoughts and are more able to let them go.
They have higher, more stable self-esteem that is less dependent on external factors. Qualities associated with well-being such as regulating and balancing emotions, attuning to others, modulating fear, responding flexibly and exhibiting insight and empathy are linked with mindfulness.
