This is a multi-disciplinary all day conference on the theme of citizenshipon citizenship. Opening address will be by the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald.

There will be contributions from classicists, historians and social scientists. The origins and evolution of the concept of citizenship and identity will be explored from classical times, through the medieval period up to partition in Ireland focusing on the implications for Ireland’s citizens. Finally, contemporary issues such as Brexit, migration and integration will be discussed.

Mathsweek 2016 is running from 15-23 October this year and there are lots of free events taking place.

The first challenge is, though, to find the suitable events for you, because the website does make life more difficult than it should. You can select “Events for the General Public”, but that covers events in the whole of Ireland. So I would like “Events in Dublin” that are for the General Public, but there is no way to combine two searches. The “Events in Dublin” also contain all events for kids.

Celebrating Goodman: Seminar and Launch

Irish Traditional Music Archive, 73 Merrion Square, Dublin 2

James Goodman (1828–1896) from Dingle, Co. Kerry, was a canon of the Church of Ireland and Professor of Irish in Trinity College Dublin and he compiled an outstanding Irish traditional music manuscript collection containing more than 2,300 tunes.

To mark the occasion of the reprint of Tunes of the Munster Pipers Volume 1 and the announcement of the ITMA/TCD Goodman Digital Project, you are invited to an afternoon (14:00-16:00) of short presentations about Canon James Goodman and his collection. Guest speakers will be Lisa Shields (co-editor of Tunes of the Munster Pipers Volume 2), Roy Stanley (Music Librarian, TCD), Nicholas Carolan (Director Emeritus ITMA) and Emer Mayock (member of the Goodman Trio).

At 16:00, Grace Toland (ITMA Director) will formally launch both the Tunes of the Munster Pipers Volume 1 reprint and the ITMA/TCD Goodman Digital Project.

Admission to both events is free.

Later on the same day (19:00), a non-free concert with the Goodman Trio (Mick O’Brien, uilleann pipes, Emer Mayock, flute & Aoife Ní Bhriain, fiddle) will take place. Tickets are EUR 10 and can be booked here.

Rising Exhibition – Public Tour

Rising is a major photographic exhibition which showcases the National Library’s rich imagery of the events and locations of 1916.

It consists of 60 photographs, including a number of large scale photographs which emphasise the Rising’s impact on Dublin’s city centre. These images are enhanced by audio recordings of actors reading from selected letters and diaries detailing first-hand accounts of the Rising.

Admission to this Walk & Talk tour is free, but you can also visit the exhibition for free outside of the tour.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

The Little Museum of Dublin has a fascinating collection of artefacts from the last 100 years Dublin’s history.
