No to Pensioners Paying Property Tax?

Local Property Tax (LPT) has sparked debate since it was first proposed in 2013 and it seems new recommendations by the Independent Alliance will spark further debate as the Government continues to review the household charge.

Following the dismissal of Shane Ross’ proposed ‘granny grant’ – an annual payment of €1,000 to grandparents who carry out childminding duties – the Minister now suggests that we exempt pensioners from paying LPT.

Currently under review, the LPT is in need of remodelling to avoid backlash from homeowners dealing with the massive hikes to their bills in 2020. In spite of Leo Varadkar, and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe’s review process, we are guaranteed big increases; down to the fact that homes are still being valued at 2013 rates in order to calculate the LPT.
