Jose Mourinho ‘furious’ after Bastian Schweinsteiger rejects transfer

Bastian Schweinsteiger’s insistence at remaining at Old Trafford is reportedly angering Man United manager Jose Mourinho. With five established central midfielders in his squad, Mourinho has made it clear – both publicly and privately – that the German is surplus to requirements.

However, according to the Star, Schweinsteiger reportedly turned down a free transfer to Sporting Lisbon yesterday, which has angered the Special One.

The World Cup winner said in a statement last week that United would be his last club in Europe, while hinting at an eventual move to the MLS. However, the transfer window in America is already closed, so it looks like the ex-Bayern Munich star is set to dig in his heels and stay at Man United until Christmas at least.

Mourinho, who had hoped to trim his squad down before the close of the transfer window, is apparently furious that Schweinsteiger won’t move on, having made it clear that he won’t play the midfielder this season.

However, Schweinsteiger still has two seasons to run on the deal he signed in the summer of 2015, and would earn a reported £18m if he just sat on the bench until his contract runs out.
